A substantial one-of-a-kind natural forest piece, individually recovered and prepared in our workshop.
This piece is identified in our workshop as Merisier (Yellow Birch) based on its appearance and, notably, the characteristic scent released by the wood when struck or freshly worked. The identification is artisan-based rather than laboratory certified.
The board shows beautiful natural variation from pale cream and golden tones to warmer reddish-brown streaks. Spalting and darker natural markings travel through portions of the grain, while several knots and irregular areas add strong visual character. Its edges retain part of the original natural contour rather than being machined into a perfectly rectangular commercial board.
Although classified in our Natural Forest Pieces collection, this is not rough lumber straight from the forest. It has already been planed and sanded in the workshop, revealing the grain and making it much closer to being ready for an artisan project while preserving its organic shape.
At approximately 7/8 in thick and 1 kg, this is a substantial piece with considerably more material than a thin decorative board.

Merisier spalté – Pièce naturelle de la forêt #2
Une pièce naturelle unique de bon format, récupérée puis préparée individuellement dans notre atelier.
Cette pièce est identifiée dans notre atelier comme du merisier (bouleau jaune) selon son apparence et notamment selon l'odeur caractéristique de merise que le bois dégage lorsqu'on lui donne un coup sec ou lorsqu'il est fraîchement travaillé. Il s'agit d'une identification artisanale et non d'une identification certifiée en laboratoire.
La pièce présente de belles variations naturelles allant du crème pâle et doré jusqu'à des zones plus chaudes brun rougeâtre. Des traces de spalting et des marques naturelles plus foncées parcourent certaines parties du grain. Plusieurs nœuds et irrégularités ajoutent également beaucoup de caractère.
Son profil n'a volontairement pas été transformé en planche commerciale parfaitement rectangulaire : une partie de la forme naturelle provenant de l'arbre a été conservée.
Même si elle fait partie de notre catégorie Pièces brutes de la forêt, il ne s'agit pas d'un morceau simplement sorti de la forêt. La pièce a déjà été rabotée et sablée dans notre atelier afin de révéler son grain et de la préparer pour le travail de l'artisan, tout en conservant son aspect organique.
Avec environ 7/8 po d'épaisseur et près de 1 kg, c'est une pièce substantielle qui offre beaucoup plus de matière qu'une simple planchette décorative.

Celle-là est nettement plus massive que la #1 : 36 1/2 po × 3 1/2 po × 7/8 po et environ 1 kg. Je la placerais donc dans une gamme de prix supérieure à la première.
